LWH History
In 2004, the Collier County Public Schools District established a task force composed of educators, School Board members, and local business leaders to explore innovative high school models that combined rigorous college-preparatory academics with career and technical education. As part of this work, task force members visited schools across Florida and Massachusetts that were recognized for delivering relevant, high-quality educational programs. Their research led to the selection of Florida’s 2005 Model High School concept, which integrated college-preparatory coursework with postsecondary technical certifications through a dual-enrollment partnership between a technical high school and the district’s postsecondary technical institution.
Following extensive community engagement, including opportunities for students and residents to suggest potential school names, the School Board unanimously voted to name the new school Lorenzo Walker Technical High School. The name honored Lorenzo Walker’s lifelong commitment to career and technical education while recognizing the unique partnership between the high school and its postsecondary counterpart, Lorenzo Walker Technical College. Through a student voting process, the Mustang was selected as the school mascot, and black, silver, and white became the school colors.
In August 2006, Lorenzo Walker Technical High School opened its doors to an inaugural class of 150 freshmen. Each subsequent year, as that first class advanced to the next grade level, a new group of freshmen enrolled and additional faculty and staff joined the campus. By the 2009–2010 school year, all four grade levels were represented, completing the school’s full implementation. On June 4, 2010, Lorenzo Walker Technical High School celebrated its first graduating class. Those students became the school’s first alumni during a combined commencement ceremony recognizing graduates of both Lorenzo Walker Technical College and Lorenzo Walker Technical High School.
For nearly two decades, Lorenzo Walker Technical High School provided students with a unique educational experience that blended academic preparation with career and technical training. In May 2024, Collier County Public Schools adopted a new model for providing high school students access to postsecondary technical education. As a result, the students who entered Lorenzo Walker Technical High School as freshmen in the fall of 2024 became the final incoming freshman class and are scheduled to graduate in 2028. Under the new model, juniors and seniors from all district high schools may participate in career dual-enrollment programs on the Lorenzo Walker campus while remaining enrolled at their home high schools.
